Install a Printer
Before you can use a new printer, you need to install the printer on your computer. Windows includes a wizard that guides you step by step through the process of installing a new printer.
Note : You will need the Windows 98 CD-ROM Disc to install a new printer.
  1. Move the mouse over Start and then press the left button.

  2. Move the mouse over Settings and then press the left button.

  3. Move the mouse over Printers and then press the left button.
    • The Printers window appears.

  4. To install a new printer, move the mouse over Add Printer and then quickly press the left button twice.
    • The Add Printer Wizard appears.

  5. To continue, move the mouse over Next and then press the left button.
    • Windows may ask how the printer connects to your computer.

  6. To install a printer that connects directly to your computer, move the mouse over Local Printer and then press the left button ( ) changes to ( ).

  7. To continue, move the mouse over Next and then press the left button.

  8. Move the mouse over the manufacturer of the printer and then press the left button.

  9. Move the mouse over the model of the printer and then press the left button.

  10. To continue move the mouse over Next and then press the left button.

  11. Move the mouse over the port you want to use with the printer and then press the left button.
    • Note :  A port is a socket at the back of a computer where you plug in a device. LPT1 is the most commonly used port for printers.

  12. To continue, move the mouse over Next and then press the left button.

  13. Windows provides a name for the printer. To use a different name, type the name.

  14. To specify if you want to use the printer as the default printer , move the mouse over one of these options and then press the left button ( ) changes to ( ). 
    • Yes : Files will always print to this printer.
    • No : Files will print to this printer only when you select the printer.

  15. To continue, move the mouse over Next and then press the left button.

  16. To specify if you want to print a test page, move the mouse over Yes or No and then press the left button ( ) changes to ( ).

  17. To install the printer, move the mouse over Finish and then press the left button.

  18. The Insert Disk dialog box appears, asking you to insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM disc.
    • Insert the CD-ROM disc into the drive.

  19. To continue, move the mouse over OK and then press the left button.
    • Windows copies the necessary files to your computer.

  20. A dialog box appears, asking if the test page printed correctly.

  21. If the page printed correctly, move the mouse over Yes and then press the left button.

  22. An icon for the printer appears in the Printers window.

  23. To close the Printers window, move the mouse over Close and then press the left button.
